In order to capture the vampire lurking in the school, Mana the exorcist transfers in, but Okamoto-kun, the vampire in question, says vampires have evolved and no longer preys on humans but lives on blood transfusions! What is Mana to do with this not so threatening, carefree, easy going vampire?

Kenn's Comment: From the get go, this one comes off as cute and happy as can be. Okamoto really steals the show with his unabashed happy-go-lucky attitude...to everything. Later demon boys share a similar pattern of making the exorcist's life difficult.

The art is really quite nice, complete with sparkles when needed (for fabulous characters). It's not a heavy series, so it's quite a nice series to wind down to. Maybe Okamoto will share some of his happiness?

If you ever have the chance, check the first chapter (or was it the prologue?). It'll give you a quick bite of how the series will feel, with it's comedy and easy going atmosphere.

Mei Tachibana has spent her 16 years without making either boyfriend or friends. One day, she drop-kicks a popular boy in school, Yamato Kurosawa, because of a misunderstanding but for some reason it seems that he takes a liking to her and one-sidedly claims that they

Kenn's Comment: A good, serious shoujo. MangaUpdates had comedy listed in this one, but after giving it a quick read through, I honestly don't feel that the comedy makes enough of a presence for me to list it as well.

The art is gorgeous (with fabulous male lead), and some realistic characters. The story doesn't meander around a lot, very often being straight to the point. It's directed towards an older audience compared to something like Special A, so don't be surprised if topics of sex and stuff like that come up.

If you're in to these kind of series, by all means, give this one a chance. You won't regret it!

A girl with a rare growth disorder that leaves her in the body of a child at the age of 19 meets a boy with a mental disorder who has the mind of a small boy in a 17 year old form. A Friendly Winter shares with us the endearing story of their day-to-day lives, joys and tribulations.

Kenn's Comment: I don't think this is the first time that I've featured a DAUM serialized webcomic. Unlike the ones I feature in the Weekly Webcomic (which I haven't really touched in a long time), I consider these series to be full manga (manhwa in this case) series that are serialized online. In a way, GanGan Online is similar, as Yandere Kanojo (a manga I featured many moons ago) is serialized both online and in print (the serialized content is slightly different where the print edition has the brunt of the story).

Anywho, this one's a nice little romantic drama of reversed situations. The characters are an endearing bunch, from Min Seong's innocence to Da Jeong's haughtiness, each of the main characters and their close family have something that makes them stand out. Da Jeong's situation is pretty darn complicated too.

Anywho, enjoy the series!

Arianrhod is a young girl from an island called Erin. She is different from all the other kids her age. All the others in the tribe have blond hair while Arian is the only one with black hair and because of this she was bullied many times. One day a traveler in silver clothing came to Erin and “named” Arian. To be named is very important because it reveals one's true self. After that the Master Drisu takes Arian in as his disciple because she was “named” by the stranger. Balor is the evil leader of Death Valley and one night he murdered all the people in Arian's tribe, and she swears to get vengeance on Balor.

Kenn's Comment: I'm a bit of a sucker for European mythology, especially the Norse and the ones of the peoples on the British Isles. This one delves into a bit of those, but sadly, not as much as I was hoping it would. The spirits Arianrhod calls upon remain the same throughout the 8 volumes I've read so far, and are more or less restricted almost entirely to those 2-4 spirits.

Another thing about this is that the characters remain largely static. Now this is just something I've noticed in the 8 volumes I've read so far, but nothing, absolutely nothing about the characters has changed. Arianrhod isn't too different from the first volume, and I forget her friend's name, but she's only changed marginally. There's also very, very little story about the characters. They kind of get thrown into the story and go from there. Makes them feel a little bit artificial, and makes it hard to really get to 'know' a character. It's a bit of a disappointment, because of how much potential you could draw out from a series like this.

The art is a bit on the retro side, but it's from way back in the 80's so cut it some slack! It does get a bit graphic, much more than it's shounen counterpart, Naruto (it's a joke).

Would I recommend this one? Maybe. It's hard to say. The setting and story is pretty cool, and the art is good too. But that thing with the characters makes it a bit hard to swallow after a while.

Yuu Tomonoga is a genius who was accepted to an American university at the young age of 13 and later accepted into the university's graduate program. Unfortunately, he loses funding for his research, but decides to drop out and continue the research on his own. He travels back to Japan in hopes of getting funding, but he quickly runs out of money for daily living. Luckily, he gets a call from an old friend and accepts his offer to teach at an all-girls school.

Kenn's Comment: Like I said, this one is a bit a of a fluffy series. There is drama, yes, but from what I've read, which isn't very much, it's not super serious heavy drama. It definitely feels like a rom-com, with it's light hearted-ness, but it's comedy isn't a key factor in the story. Using GTO as a comparison wouldn't do this one too much good, as the only linking thread is that both have teachers are main characters, and said teachers help the students. It's a common plot, and the two leads are completely different.

It's a bit hard to judge this one because of how little of it I've read, but it's definitely something I'd keep my eye on. It's nice, light and fluffy with just enough comedy to keep it from getting overly serious, and just enough drama to keep it from getting too sweet and goofy.

Tales of a high-school calligraphy club.

A story about a high-school calligraphy club on the verge of breaking up that enters in a major competition while overcoming problems. Yuki, a promising female judoist, and Yukari, a quiet Canadian-raised boy who just returned to Japan, end up joining the club for the sake of maintaining the membership required to keep the club. Together with the old club members with unique characters, they gradually discover the fun of calligraphy and work together to win in the competition. -- NHK

Kenn's Comment: CANADA! PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND! Canada is so rarely represented or even mentioned in foreign series that any inclusion or mention of this wonderful country stands out like a wonderfully sore thumb. The Japanese love Anne of Green Gables which is set in the little province of Prince Edward Island, which is where the main character grows up.

Anywho, the story is great. From it's description it sounds pretty boring, but the series is written in a way that makes even the most mundane task rather gripping. Calligraphy makes up a good chunk of the story, but it doesn't drag, which is really nice. When the new members are training, you can see them progress and get better, seeing both their initial work and the end work and really gives a sense of progression that feels more honest and realistic compared to a training arc in a battle manga.

The character relations are top notch in this one. We've got the...energetic upperclassmen, the kind and hardworking club president, and the geeky teacher. Then we've got the main character, the slightly awkward Canadian, and the other new member, the competitive Judo champion, Yukari. Watching her reactions to everything that happens is so much fun because they're often little things in the background of the panels.

Also, this one is a two time nominated work for the Best Manga catergory in the Manga Taisho. You know it's gonna be good if it's a two time nominee!

As a result of a strange encounter with a mysterious carcinogenic fetus he found inside a patient’s skull, brain surgeon MINAKATA Jin has slipped back through time. Equipped with modern medical knowledge, he faces various fatal diseases and injuries. Then, he meets the ordinary people of Edo as well as illustrious figures, and his surgical knife carves out a new history and story of life.

Kenn's Comment: I'm pretty sure that this manga is award nominated work, but I can't seem to find any information on that. What I can tell you is that it was adapted into an multi-award winning TV Drama (and it's sequel) on Japanese TV, as well a Korean drama (story changed to fit Korea) going by Dr. Jin.
Anywho, the manga is superb. I'm not a huge fan of medical dramas (primarily because everyone's sleeping with everyone else's toasters) or dramas in general, but there's something about JIN that does it for me. The emotions feel real; Jin's vast medical knowledge; the Edo period setting. These factors add up into a genuinely gripping story.

I haven't watched the dramas, and I'm not super far into the manga, but from the bit I've read, I can guarantee that this one will be a great read. A fair warning, but being a medical drama, some parts of it can be rather graphic.

Coil is a man whose idea of "life" is his alter ego in an online world. A place where the hearts of people come together...and it is not a pretty place. The slender spiderweb that connects their souls within this endless world brings greater pain than reality itself.

Kenn's Comment: While this series masquerades as an online MMORPG, it delves much deeper than your average one.

For starters, I've given it the 'psychological' tag, someone I really dislike using, but I feel that this one really deserves it. I'm quite picky when it comes to genre tags, for example the tragedy tag. I won't use it if the manga starts with a whole city getting slaughtered, and thus setting the main character on a path for revenge. If said series focused on the character who slaughtered the city, trying to attone for his/her sins and ultimately dying, I'd probably slap the tragedy tag on it. It's more a classic approach of the tragedy (like a Greek tragedy).

Tags aside, this one has all the action and guild planning that we all know and love from series like .//Hack and SAO/Accel World, but this one has something those don't - a mature counselling aspect. The world in ナツノクモ is vastly open, and, like in the world of Summer Wars some professional practioners have taken to the world for experimental practices. Through VR interactions, they hold counselling sessions over the game. I won't say too much and spoil it, but it does introduce a very interesting aspect to the series. It's not as action heavy as other VR game themed series, but the psychological aspect really makes this one a great read.

The story is about class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Middle School where every morning they greet their sensei with a massive firing squad. The sensei is a weird combination of a ALIEN and an octopus that moves at speeds of mach-20. It turns out this creature was responsible for the destruction of the moon, rendering it forever in a crescent shape. He has announced that he will destroy the world in 1 year. The creature will teach class 3-E how to assassinate him before the year is over.

Kenn's Comment: From the man who brought us Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, something completely different. It's really quite interesting, and a far cry from your typical battle manga. The first chapter was really well done in that it was entertaining and interesting, while not boxing the manga into a set storyline. It also dropped a hint or two of Koro-sensei's past, which makes me wonder about the 'destroying the earth' thing. So far, we've pretty much seen that he's a great teacher, albeit a bit odd. Alien GTO kind of thing? I'm down with that.

Sakugi Mitsuaki is a poor college student who gets hooked on figure modeling. In return for helping his class he receives some special putty -- but the figure he builds with it suddenly comes to life. The figure is a life force called Orichalcum ("Oriharukon") that fulfills the wish of its creator. Their strange life together begins.

Kenn's Comment: I feel like I put this one up before, but I'm pretty sure I only mentioned it. It came up waaaaaaay back when I got the Reycal revoltech.

This one's kind of like Rozen Maiden, with the 'doll' fighting and competition. If memory serves me correct, beating an opponent in this results in winning their orichalcum, which isn't too different from winning the thing from Rozen Maiden that slips my mind.

Anywho, Tsunashima Shirou is the man behind the Jinki series, so the art is more or less guaranteed to be good. Story wise, it's pretty good though I can't exactly vouch for that since I haven't read too much of it. Just enough to know the general gist of it, and have a good idea of what Reycal is like.

I'm probably worse at art related subjects than I am at math, so I wouldn't dare even try making one, but if one of your figures (assuming you have them) could come to life, which one would you want? Not sure if Gunpla should count...

If it was for combat, I'd have to say Black Rock Shooter due to her weaponry. For everything else, I'm split between Seto San and Homura. Gunpla allowed, I'd say either the Graham custom Flag or the Blue Astray Frame. They're so cool looking!

The day after he finds himself dumped by his girlfriend, Sorayama Shun recieves a letter... from himself? The letter was from Shun 25 years ago for his future self. The letter reminds him of the time when he dreamed of owning a Countach and being a successful professional racer. With loads of luck and his ambition to make his childhood dream come true, he finds himself as a new owner of an LP400 Countach.

Kenn's Comment: Read a bit of this a few years back, but take too much to it then, but it does certainly build on you. I wouldn't say I'm a car guy, but I do appreciate a nice lookin' car...and being a guy, we like anything that's loud, shiny and goes really, really fast.

Anywho, unlike Initial D, which focuses on drifting the mountain passes in modded cars, this one's emphasis lies in the realm of the super cars - the powerful cars that would turn heads wherever they pass through...and we could only dream to afford. Likewise, you won't be finding these tearing up and down mountain passes. I doubt you'd be able to pull off the stunts they do in Initial D when you're barreling down the road at 300km/h in one of these.

Anywho, with 27 ongoing volumes, you'll be reading this one for years.

Title: BTOOOM!, ブトゥーム
Author: Inoue Junya
Genre: Seinen, Action, Drama, Psychological, Romance, Sci-Fi
Serialized in: Shinchosha Comic Bunch
Total Volume Count: 8 (ongoing)

Series Summary from MangaUpdates:

Sakamoto Ryuuta is an unemployed 22-year-old who lives with his mother. In the real world, there may be nothing really special about him, but online, he's one of the world's top players of the combat game "BTOOOM"!

One day, he awakes in what appears to be a tropical island, though he has no memory of how or why he has come to be there. While wandering around, Ryuuta sees someone and calls out for help. The stranger responds by throwing a bomb at him! Now Ryuuta realizes both that his life is in danger and that he has somehow been trapped in a real-life version of his favorite game! Will Ryuuta be able to survive long enough to figure out how and why he ended up here?

Kenn's Comment: Let me start off by saying that this one isn't for the faint of heart. Blood and gore are quite copious, violence coming naturally, with sexual themes trailing not too far behind.

The story really keeps you on edge. Situation wise, the comparison with the Hunger Games really works. It's a fight to the death that's more or less for the entertainment of others, to win and leave you have to satisfy the requirements (7 chips I think?), and you have occasional supplies dropped in the field. I used the Bomberman thing because of how everyone is armed with various kinds of bombs, each one with it's own unique characteristics.

The story itself is really quite fast paced. With various alliances and jerk-face characters it's really something you read with a focus on the way characters act. The art is great, and there's really not a boring moment in what I've read so far. I'd say it's a good read for those who can stomach people getting blown to chunks.

Risking his life to ensure humanity's survival, Tanikaze Nagate rides out in his silver armour, the Tsugumori!

Thousands of years have passed since the Gauna destroyed the Solar System.

The enormous seed ship, Sidonia, travels through space while propagating and producing humans.

Brought up in the lowest decks of Sidonia, a young man, Tanikaze Nagate, becomes a Guardian trainee, and is authorized to pilot the outdated but historically renowned Tsugumori.

The battle with Nagate's life at stake begins now!

Kenn's Comment: The summary makes it a bit more exciting than it is. Don't get me wrong now. It's not boring, but it's not action oriented like a Gundam series might be. The Mecha battle scenes are very coordinated, the character often fight and moving in formation. It reminds me quite a bit of the battles in 進撃の巨人, which I featured back in April.

Nihei Tsutomu has Blame! and Biomega, among others, under his belt. His art is rather distinctive, but it really quite nice. The mecha designs are really cool, though I feel that the ships, specifically the Sidonia, could be a little bit more...special. It's certainly not as elaborate as the ships of Macross and Gundam, but the Sidonia is rather bland.

As a Sci-Fi, I feel that it gives a much more Sci-Fi feel than the more recent Mecha series have. There's something about it that makes this feel a lot more sci-fi. Anywho, I'm going cut it off here before I start ranting. It's a good read!

Magic is a product of neither legends nor fairy tales, but instead has become a technology of reality since a time unknown to people.

Supernatural power became a technology systematized through magic, while magic became a technical skill. A "Supernatural Power User" became a "Magic Technician".
Magic Technicians (in short, Magicians) are nurtured through Magic High Schools and Universities.

This is a story about:
A defective, low achieving older brother.
A perfect, flawless high achieving younger sister.
After both siblings entered a Magic High School,
The stage of daily turbulence was unveiled ---.

Kenn's Comment: I've changed some of the wording in the summary so that it reads more naturally. I'm almost certain that it's a rough translation off the back of the first volume, or even off the novel's website.

Anywho, magic exists in this one, but it takes a similar route as the Index series does with the ESPer powers. Magic is essentially science, coupled with super powers. This one also is infinitely more technical than the Index series is. Often, you'll have somewhere up to 10-15 pages dedicated to explaining how someone's spell works. It also delves into various aspects of particle physics, antimatter, and some other stuff (took a year of physics in high school and this is well above that level. Even if you can read Japanese fluently (which I can't) you might find this one a bit more challenging compared to other light novels due to the sheer amount of jargon.

Character wise, Tatsuya is quite possibly one of the most overpowered and badass main characters I've seen in a very, very long time. You'll quickly find that he's not quiet like some of the other characters we're used to. Also, having a cold, emotionless main character is really quite nice, especially after we've gotten characters like Amata in Evol (MIKONO SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN), and, in general, your typical hot blooded, always shouting main character. Someone who's more subdued is always welcome.

The other characters are all interesting in their own way too. You have Miyuki's constant advances, and their classmates all have their own little quirks and quips. All in all, it's a great read, even if it's a little bit heavy on the technical jargon.

There's a manga adaptation of it that's floating around SquareEnix GFantasy, so you can check that one out for those who want to read it in manga form.

Roma is a mysterious girl that is on a mission to collect “human greed” through the use of various magical objects that have unique powers. When humans use these magical items to satisfy their own personal emotions, such as love, their greed level increases and Roma is able to steal their excess greed.

The people that use Roma’s objects seem to always let their greed destroy themselves, putting themselves in a worse situation than before.

Kenn's Comment: This one is pretty interesting. Human vices are one of the most important things in this one. Driven by desires, humans use the items that Roma gives to them - magical items that help them achieve their immediate desires. It almost always ends badly, with badly not being that bad. Often, the 'bad end' is good end. Most of the focus characters are blinded by desire and often need a sobering slap of reality, in this case, the traveling magic peddler Roma.

If the series took a darker route, Roma would be a demon who exchanges magical items for human souls. It'd kind of be like Faust in a way.

Anywho, each chapter pretty much standalone, with Roma being the only permanent character. It's a pretty good read and the art is superb.

Tatsumi is a fighter who just got robbed by a pretty girl, but his luck seems to be looking up, as another pretty girl has taken him in. What he doesn’t know is that this girl is about to be visited by a family of assassins (including the girl who robbed him) and they might be the good guys, and be recruiting...

Kenn's Comment: The series as a whole presents are rather bleak world setting. Between the crime ridden cities and the corrupt government, there really isn't much of a worse condition you could find for a world. A sudden epidemic and maybe a massive war with a neighbouring super power would pretty much make the land a living hell.

Anywho, it's an interesting series. Night Raid reminds me a lot of something...but I can't remember exactly what. They're pretty much anti-government Vigilantes. Not quite anarchists, but they do certainly have a fair bit of...resentment towards the current rulers.

One thing that I'm liking about the series is that everybody has a teiga, or a cursed weapon. For those who watched the recent 境界線上のホライゾン (Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere), they're like the MSA's..though they come with a bit more...unwanted baggage, shall I say. Back on topic, main character does amazingly well for being one of the only major characters to not have a teiga. Strong main characters (from the get-go) have always been a strong drawing point for me (mainly due to tiring of long training arcs after every loss).

I'll list a few cons now. Though it runs along side series like Yandere Kanojo, Inu x Boku SS and Prunus Girl, it does feature a hell of a lot of violence, blood and a little bit of gore. There's also a good chunk of torture, from your general chains and cages to some pretty brutal stuff. It's not that bad, but I know that not every one is quite as desensitized as I am. Another point I'd like to make is that the author isn't afraid of treating his characters like paper. I'm just going to say now, if you do decide on starting this, don't get too attached to characters that don't appear regularly.

All in all, I'd say it makes a decent read. Not ground breaking or super "omg you have to read this", but it's enjoyable if you can stomach it.

Sakura Ichiko is a 16-year-old girl who leads a charmed life and is blessed with beauty, brains, and health. She has an abundance of “Happiness Energy”, which can make people happy, but at the cost of absorbing all the “Happiness Energy” from her surroundings. She has caused the energy balance of the world to become unbalanced and because of this, she becomes the target of a Poverty God named Momiji. Momiji's goal is to remove Ichiko’s power of absorbing other people’s Happiness Energy and to return all the energy she has taken to its rightful place.

Kenn's Comment: An awesome series that deserves every bit of the praise that it gets. It's a really great series, with gags and references very reminiscent of Gintama. Character development is great in this one too. All the characters are a bit broken in their own ways, and go about making up for their lackings in, often, hilarious ways. The comedy is always there, but it never cuts into the drama like it does all too often in Hayate no Gotoku!, where comedy often interrupts serious scenes to loosen the atmosphere. In this one, drama is played out before the comedy comes in, or has a little comic quip stuck in, maintaining the drama, but throwing in a little chuckle here and there.

The art is great. Expressions are quite varied, and when Sukeno does a reference/parody scene, they're always spot on.

All in all, a great, great read. Action isn't a huge part of the series, comedy is almost always there, and the drama always really well done. Great series. Really looking forward to the anime in the Spring. Go go!

This week we head head (once again) back into Korean webcomic territory.

This year has been changed into a mixed gender school. The only male student- Song Jae Gu, has been granted a full 3-year scholarship regardless of grades. Being someone who had to spend every moment working or taking care of his two younger brothers, he accepted.

However, the scholarship was granted with the sole condition he does not leave. But after meeting Queen, the bloody champion of Wild's-League, drenching her in coffee, calling her a "Monster" and getting caught while she was taking a shower... that could prove fatal.

Kenn's Comment: I've been on and off with this one, but I'm looking forward to see how Jae Gu shapes up in his first brawl.

Anywho, the art (Zhena has Pet Diary, Nineteen, Twenty One, and Telling Through The Colours under her belt) is great. And, like most of these Korean webcomics, it's in glorious full colour!

and the story...well the character dynamics are great. The Queen's tsun-tsun moments are always great, though they're often so sparse that they almost feel forced. Though if you look closely, you'll see that she does have a lot more of these reactions...most of them aren't quite as pronounced. Boxer Girl Moon Young and Dal Dal are great too. The...often friendly dynamic between the two of them is always fun to watch.

Series Summary from MangaUpdates:

Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to "reset" her image and life as a new high-school student. Because she's cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn't get her feeling across to the one boy she has always liked, Tanaka-kun.

Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won't be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

Kenn's Comment: If you didn't notice, the title is missing a character, which really threw me off.

Anywho, this one's a really good school based story. Futaba's quite the character, and I'm sure she's pretty easy to relate to in terms of her efforts to fit in with the other girls. She's a nice middle-ground between the typical shoujo characters who are either extremely girly (usually to the point of stereotypical) or very headstrong. Kou is pretty cool too. He's not exactly an original character, as there are a good number of other characters like him out there, but the way he supports Futaba really just gives you a feel-good-feel.

The romance is a bit slow, and Futaba has a bit too much tsun  and not enough dere, which often causes her to snap the flags that she raises. It's nothing that's exactly new though, as this kind of thing is usually expected. ^^; It's not too often that you have a protagonist who's honest with his/her feelings.

All in all, I'd say it's a good read. If you have the time, give this one a spin.

Title:　進撃の巨人, Shingeki no Kyojin, Advance of the Giants
Author: Isayama Hajime
Genre: Shounen, Action, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery
Serialized in: Kodansha Bessatsu Shounen Magazine
Total Volume Count: 7 (ongoing)

Series Summary from MangaUpdates:

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

Kenn's Comment: This one won the 35th Kodansha Manga Award (Best Shounen) and was nominated for the 4th Manga Taisho Award.

This one is pretty intense. Fans of action series will really like this one, because action is one this one exudes with absolute confidence. It's very much a series where most fights have the main character and his group of humanity constantly on the losing side. The battles aren't a bore either; the 3D gear sends the characters rappelling like Spiderman or Lost Planet, for those who know what I'm talking about, and they're almost entirely reliant on tactics to win any of their battles.

If you're looking for fanservice, I'd advise you find something else: the most you'll find is a female giant. Even so, the female characters have a good chunk of art of them on Pixiv, for those who are familiar with it.

Anywho, like I said, this one's definitely not for the kiddies; copious amounts of blood and death make this one to really keep away from them.
